Accommodation: The Empire Hotel and Country Club
In the tradition of some of the world's most prominent Heads of State, the MUN delegates will be lodged in the Empire Hotel and Country Club, a five star hotel which is conveniently located at a 5 minutes' drive from Jerudong International School. Visiting schools should book their accommodation directly with the hotel and confirm that they are taking part in the MUN conference at JIS to guarantee the best rates. We have been able to secure a discounted rate of 230 BND per double room and 285 BND for a triple room. These rates include breakfast and the use of the hotel facilities such as the gym, swimming pools and access to the private beaches. Brunei enjoys a tropical climate all year round with daytime temperatures fluctuating around 32 degrees Celsius. The beaches have sandflies, however, so do not forget your insect repellent! For more information about the rooms and the resort as such, access the hotel's website directly through this hyperlink.
The host country: Brunei Darussalam
Brunei is a small Sultanate, situated in the middle of two parts of Sarawak, Malaysia. Located in the tropics, it enjoys a warm and humid climate all year round. The airport is located at 15 mins drive from Jerudong International School and at 20 mins drive from the Empire hotel, where delegates will be lodged. The Brunei dollar is interchangeable with the Singapore dollar and three pin 'UK style' plugs are the most common in Brunei. In line with the Islamic tradition of the host country, students are advised to dress modestly during the conference and outside the confines of the hotel or private clubs. Shoulders should not be exposed, knees should be covered and cleavage should not be excessive. The sale of alcohol and cigarettes are forbidden in Brunei. Note that students are not allowed to drink alcohol during the conference, as this is a serious offence in Brunei. The importation of illegal drugs carries the death penalty in Brunei.
Cultural and natural highlights during your stay in Brunei
A large part of Brunei is covered by Borneo's rainforest, of which some areas can only be reached by a journey through a traditional long boat. On Saturday, visiting schools have the opportunity to take part in an optional visit to Borneo's rainforest in the country's national park of the Temburong District. Leaving from the world's largest water village, Kampung Ayer, a speedboat will bring you through Borneo's mangroves to Temburong. From there the journey continues into to the heart of the rainforest through Borneo's tropical rivers. The highlight of the trip is undoubtedly the magnificent view from he canopy bridge across the treetops of the tropical rainforest. If you wish to take part in this optional trip, contact Dr Dickinson directly. Students and teachers who wish to take part in this trip should bring swimming clothes, suitable attire for jungle trekking and trainers. A hat and sun protection as well as mosquito repellent are highly recommended.
